Details:
The Moorish Castle, probably founded by Muslims, dates back to the 9th century, during the period of Islamic rule and the conquests of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. Curiously, no battle was ever fought here, since its function was not to defend the town of Sintra, but to guard Lisbon and the surrounding area.
