Built by an English millionaire named Francis Cook in the 18th century, the Palace of Monserrate is not only one of the best examples of the architecture of the Romantic period at Sintra, but also a unique testimony to the eclectic spirit of the 18th century. Strongly English in inspiration, it merges with one of the richest botanical gardens in Portugal, with its exotic trees, waterfalls and lakes.
