Also known as Paço Real or Palácio da Vila, the National Palace of Sintra stands in Praça da República, the historic "center of the center" of Sintra, with its two monumental conical chimneys coming from the kitchen being its trademark. With an Arab foundation, it became the residence of the Portuguese royal family from the 12th century onwards, and is the only surviving medieval royal palace.
